Bubbled Broncos

By Marc Mandell   8/14/17

It’s the second week of pre-season football for Denver, and the roster spots are going to start drying up, as early as next Monday. It feels like we are already looking at some of these guys riding the bubble. The dreaded roster spot bubble. Who would you put on list short list?

1: Jamaal Charles

He will need more days like this. It could be that Denver is just taking their time with him, being careful not to rush that knee back into service. He is on a cheap, cheap deal and with Deangelo Henderson showing strong last week, Steven Ridley playing like he has nothing to lose, because he doesn’t, Jamaal could be in trouble. He needs to show real progress this week against SF, although we will all have to wait because Coach Joseph said today he will wait to see what Jamaal will do until week 3 of pre-season to see if Charles will hold a roster spot. To make sure that his knee is up to it, and so is the rest of his body. He’s not a young pup anymore. Broncos Country holds its breath….

2: Kalif Raymond

The kick returner is on the bubble only because Denver drafted his replacement this past April in Carlos Henderson. Carlos has had a very rough training camp, and the fact that he was drafted is the only reason Raymond is in trouble. Kalif has out played Henderson every time he is on the field. In my opinion, it would be unwise to let go of Raymond as he is the better player right now. Also, there is word on the street that Carlos could go to IR, possibly opening a spot for Raymond.

3: Ty Sambrailo

While he is looking very majestic indeed, he was drafted as the future at LT three years ago. Though he never really panned out. Injuries in the first two years followed by another LT draft pick in Garrett Bolles this past draft, leaves Ty in a tricky position-ish…He has been playing as the 2nd team LT, and has shown well. I worry it may not be enough however. Stephenson could very well be here instead, but it’s Donald’s experience that will keep him in it, while Ty might be looking in from the outside. It will also come down to health of the rest of the line to see if he can stick around or not. Menelik Watson has had health issues his entire career as well, so if Watson goes down and is going to miss more than 3 or 4 weeks, Denver might elect to hold on to the CSU tackle. We shall see…

4: Jeff Heuerman

I say he’s on the bubble, but he should be out of Denver by week 4 of the preseason. Injuries, and complete lack of production have left the OSU TE staring down the barrel of unemployment. Turns out Cecil is right. Jeff hasn’t done anything in the Mile High City, and couple that with the fact that the Broncos don’t really use the position for anything other than, anything, it’s a tough break for Jeff.

5: Probably Kyle Sloter

Look, I get it. He played well against the Bears. But it was the third and fourth string guys, which is still a leap from the starters. And let’s not forget about Chad Kelly. The Broncos will go in to the season with 3 QB’s. Trevor will be the starter, Paxton and Chad will be competing for the backup role.

Wrap up:

I didn’t include Donald Stephenson, Micheal Schofield and Cody Latimer because I can’t see Denver losing too much depth at the offensive line positions, and Donald simply has more reps and more experience. Cody is pretty valuable on special teams. I know, he’s a 2nd round pick, but are you going to tell me that Denvers special teams play could use any more weaknesses? Yeah, didn’t think so. Schofield was consistent and reliable last year, and looked far better at guard than tackle. Stephenson… I don’t know. I guess he is a warm body in case things go really south.

I’m sure this will change next week, as 1 game can change everything. Just ask TD. Until then, have a great week and I will be back later on!!
